Jenni Hermoso files criminal complaint against Luis Rubiales over kiss

If convicted of sexual assault, Rubiales could face a fine or between one and four years in prison, according to a recently enacted law on sexual consent.

Jenni Hermoso files criminal complaint against Luis Rubiales: Jenni Hermoso has filed a criminal complaint accusing Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish football federation, of sexual assault for the unwanted kiss he gave her after the Women’s World Cup final, according to the office of the Spanish prosecutor.

The complaint was filed after prosecutors at the country’s highest criminal court said they were investigating the incident, in which Rubiales grabbed Hermoso by the head, dragged her towards him, and planted a kiss on her lips, out of concern that sexual assault charges may be warranted. Hermoso was asked to submit a formal complaint as part of the investigation.

The prosecutor’s office stated that Hermoso’s previous day’s testimony would be processed “immediately.” If convicted of sexual assault, Rubiales could face a fine or between one and four years in prison, according to a recently enacted law on sexual consent.

In a statement released at the end of the previous month, Hermoso stated that the incident left her feeling “vulnerable and the victim of aggression.” She characterised the kiss as “impulsive, sexist, inappropriate, and without any consent on my part.”

Her statement followed days of controversy in which Rubiales referred to critics of the kiss as “idiots and stupid people” and then issued an apology that was widely viewed as insincere. Later, the 46-year-old attempted to depict the kiss as voluntary.

Soon after, Fifa suspended Rubiales provisionally and ordered him to avoid contact with Hermoso and those close to her. The federation demanded his resignation days later amid escalating outrage over the kiss and Rubiales grabbing his crotch as La Roja won the World Cup.

On Tuesday, it issued a statement apologising for the “enormous damage” caused by its president’s actions in an effort to further distance itself from Rubiales.

While Rubiales has not yet resigned, the women’s national team’s controversial coach Jorge Vilda was fired by the federation on Tuesday. Last year, 15 players refused to play for Vilda, with some characterising him as controlling and overbearing. This exposed the chasm between the majority of the team and Vilda.

Vilda’s Take On The Complaint

Tuesday night, Vilda argued that his dismissal was unjustified. “I have devoted my all for seventeen years and do not comprehend [the decision]. He told Cadena Ser that his dismissal was unjustified.

As the fallout from Rubiales’ actions persisted, however, his position became untenable, with 81 footballers refusing to play for the national team’s current leadership and nearly all of his coaching staff resigning.

Vilda defended his decision to acclaim Rubiales after the football chief criticised “fake feminism” and decried what he perceived to be a “social assassination” during a federation assembly. “It is quite difficult to be the only person who does not acclaim when 140 or 150 people do so. “Afterwards, you’re in a bit of disbelief and you think to yourself, ‘I would never applaud that,'” said Vilda.

He denied claims that he exerted pressure on Hermoso to participate in Rubiales’ apology in an effort to reduce the pressure on the football chief, and he observed that he was not in Sydney when the kiss occurred. “When I viewed the footage, I was shocked. “This is an improper action,” he said.

Rubiales sent a new statement to the Spanish media on Friday night, admitting that he had “made some obvious mistakes that I deeply regret” and condemning what he termed a “unprecedented political and media lynching.” He pledged to continue defending himself to “prove the truth”

The Guardian sent him a request for comment via the federation, but he did not respond.
