Jarrett, who was born in 1942 and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, began his career in professional wrestling as a performer in the early 1960s before transitioning into promotion in the late 1970s. In 1977, he and fellow wrestler Eddie Marlin founded the Continental Wrestling Association (CWA), which quickly rose to prominence in Memphis’s wrestling scene.

Due in large part to Jarrett’s unique and innovative ideas, Memphis was one of the most popular wrestling territories in the United States during the 1980s. He created some of wrestling’s most memorable characters and storylines, including the epic rivalry between Jerry “The King” Lawler and Andy Kaufman.
