Jim Crown Obituary: Chicago Businessman, Passes Away In Race Track Accident

Jim Crown tragically passed away on his 70th birthday at a race track in Woody Creek. He was the chairman and CEO of Henry Crown and also the managing partner of Aspen Skiing Co.

The accident occurred when his vehicle hit an impact barrier at the Aspen Motorsports Park in Woody Creek, as confirmed by the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.

“The official cause of death is pending autopsy, although multiple blunt force trauma is evident,” the Coroner’s Office said in a statement. “The manner is accident.”

The coroner, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, and Colorado State Patrol have chosen not to disclose any additional information at this time due to an ongoing investigation.

“The Crown family is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Jim Crown in an accident earlier today. The family requests that their privacy be respected at this difficult time. Further details regarding plans for a memorial to remember Jim’s remarkable life will be released at a later date,” Jacob Crows, a spokesman for the family, said in a statement Sunday night.

Jim Crown was the chairman and CEO of Henry Crown and Co., a privately owned company that invests in various sectors. He held prominent positions in notable organizations such as General Dynamics Corp., JPMorgan Chase, The Aspen Institute, and the University of Chicago.

Jim was a respected member of the legal and intelligence communities, and his accomplishments earned him recognition and appointments. Born in Chicago in 1953, Jim Crown had an impressive academic background, obtaining a B.A. in political science from Hampshire College and a law degree from Stanford Law School.

Jim joined Salomon Brothers Inc. before returning to Chicago to work at his family’s investment firm. Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to the financial industry.

Jim Crown is survived by his parents, wife Paula, six siblings, and his children Torie, Hayley, W. Andrew, and Summer Crown. A private service and a celebration of his life will be held later this year.

In recent months, he oversaw important developments within the Aspen Skiing Co., including the renovation of Buttermilk Ski Area and strategic hiring decisions.

Jim Crown’s leadership and influence played a significant role in making Aspen Skiing Co. a leader in customer service, experienced staff, and a commitment to environmental sustainability and addressing affordable housing challenges.
