James William Buffett, who was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi on Christmas Day 1946, initially pursued a degree in history during his college years. Surprisingly, he didn’t take up a guitar until his freshman year, initiating a musical journey that would define his life.

Buffett recorded his first album, “Down to Earth,” in 1970 while working in Nashville, Tennessee as a correspondent for “Billboard” magazine. The album’s hit single, “Margaritaville,” became his signature tune, resonating around the world.

Aside from “Margaritaville,” Buffett’s repertoire included a variety of songs showcasing his unique blend of “drunken Caribbean rock and roll.” Songs such as “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Fins,” “A Pirate Looks at 40,” “He Went to Paris,” and “Son of a Son of a Sailor” gave his musical legacy profundity and variety.
