July 4th Fireworks Spectacular: Your Guide to Buying, Watching, and Cancellations in Southern California

As a result of new regulations implemented in late May by Los Angeles County's water-quality watchdog

July 4th Fireworks Spectacular: Have pyrotechnics lost their lustre? The escalating problems and rising costs indicate that this may be the case. We examine the future of one of the oldest traditions in America.

As a result of new regulations implemented in late May by Los Angeles County’s water-quality watchdog, there will be no Fourth of July fireworks over King Harbour in Redondo Beach this year. The new regulations restrict the use of pyrotechnics over water by requiring the launch area to be enclosed by three walls and conducting underwater surveys.

Pasadena officials have vowed to revive the Rose Bowl’s Fourth of July pyrotechnics display. But for the time being, what had been a decades-old, annual Fourth of July AmericaFest celebration – one of the nation’s largest and longest-running shows that attracted crowds from the region – has been cancelled due to recent revenue losses.
