Justin Sane Profession

Sane and his friend Pat Thetic founded Anti-Flag in 1988. 1996 saw the publication of their debut album, Die for the Government. Andy Flag left the ensemble later that year owing to interpersonal conflicts.

In 1997 and 1998, the band went through several lineup changes before settling on a permanent configuration consisting of Sane as lead guitarist and vocalist, Thetic as drummer, Chris Head as guitarist and backup vocalist, and Chris “#2” Barker as bassist and second vocalist.

Their System Doesn’t Work For You, the group’s second album, was released in 1998. In 1999, Anti-Flag founded their own record label, A-F Records, and released their third studio album, A New Kind of Army.

Following discussions with the label’s owner, “Fat Mike” Burkett, they consented to join Fat Wreck Chords in 2001. Underground Network was the group’s first album after adopting the name Fat Wreck Chords.

Mobilise, a recording created shortly after the September 11 assaults, was released in early 2002. Anti-Flag and Bouncing Souls issued a split CD seven months later. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine authored The Terror State, which was published in 2003.

Anti-Flag’s debut DVD, Death of a Nation, was released in 2004. The DVD contains live performances, three music videos, an interview with the band, tour behind-the-scenes footage, and three montages created by the band.

RCA Records released Anti-Flag’s For Blood and Empire in 2006. The Bright Lights of America was published in 2008. In May 2008, Sane moved to East End, London, but he subsequently returned to Pittsburgh.

On March 4, 2009, Sane fractured his collarbone after falling awkwardly in the audience during a concert at the LCR in Norwich in an attempt to break up a fight.

Anti-Flag chose to postpone both their planned European headline tour and the remainder of their tour with Rise Against as a result. During the 2009 Rise Against/Anti-Flag/Flobots tour of the United Kingdom, a 2-track split record with Rise Against was initially included with the purchase of any merchandise.

Sane denied the allegations and labelled them “categorically false” in a July 26 message posted to his newly activated Instagram account.

Sane also explained why he had taken so long to respond, stating that he required time to “absorb the initial shock.” His Anti-Flag bandmates issued a distinct statement announcing their decision to disband.
