Thursday, per his agent Nicole St. John, Jefferson died away. In August, he made the announcement that he had been diagnosed with cancer.

“Every now and then God will give you a challenge and leave it up to you to fix it,” he wrote then. “When I was first diagnosed with cancer I had to stop, pause, and didn’t want to share with anyone. Not my family nor extended family. Today I’m finally at a place to share because my faith is getting stronger.”

Jefferson, born in Houston on April 7, 1970, received an MFA in acting from the University of Arizona and a BFA in musical theater from U.S. International in San Diego. Boys on the Side (1995) was the first film in which he appeared.

In the 2012 film Django Unchained, he portrayed Pudgy Ralph alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jamie Foxx. Afterwards, he portrayed Charly in The Hateful Eight (2015) and Land Pirate Keith in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).

Foxx paid tribute to the actor via social media on Thursday, writing, “This one stings. Keith, you have been nothing but grace throughout your entire existence; your heart is pure and your love is incalculable; you were an extraordinary soul. Everyone will miss you terribly. This will take a very long time to recover. Farewell, my companion. I adore you”

In the 1990s, when Jefferson appeared on two episodes of The Jamie Foxx Show, Foxx and Jefferson, who had met in college in San Diego, began collaborating. Their most recent work was the Prime Video drama series The Burial.
