In the early morning hours of August 4, 2021, North Bergen police officer Jon Nunez stopped Cevallos’ erratically driven and speeding Kia Stinger at the intersection of 61st Street and Kennedy Boulevard.

A concerned bystander informed the officer that Cevallos had nearly collided with a bicyclist due to his excessive pace, creating a tense situation. Officer Nunez listed the accusations against Cevallos without delay, including reckless driving, careless driving, and speeding. In consideration of Cevallos’ provisional license status, he issued citations for careless driving, dodging a red light, and driving beyond permitted hours.

Rodriguez, the passenger, disclosed that they were on their first date, blaming herself for the traffic stop during this heated exchange. Nunez, however, emphasized emphatically that if an accident were to occur, the driver would be solely responsible, not the passenger.
