Lebo Le Batard dead? Tuesday, LEBO’s sibling conveyed the tragic news that the artist had passed away. Ferrari, Google, Redbull, and the fashion designer Ralph Pucci were among LEBO’s many customers and partners. He was 50 years old.

The demise of David “LEBO” Le Batard was announced on the “Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz” by Le Batard’s older brother Dan, a former ESPN anchor and Miami Herald sports journalist.

The sportscaster said, “I have been grieving for a year because, since he was diagnosed more than a year ago, he has been steadily deteriorating, and it has been excruciatingly difficult to watch a poison eat away at him from the inside, and one of the greatest spirits I’ve ever encountered succumb to illness.”

On November 19, 1972, David Le Batard came into existence. At age 13, he and his family moved from Miami to Broward County, where he frequently visited his Cuban grandparents in Little Havana. Both Florida International University and Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School were his alma maters.

Lebo Le Batard dead? Under the alias LEBO, he viewed himself as a “innovator of postmodern cartoon expressionism.” The Cuban-American graphic and fine artist was delighted with his journey from graffiti writing to operating a successful Wynwood gallery and Miami Beach studio.

“I operate independently. I own my own business. I abhor the word’sellout.’ The artist told the Miami New Times in 2016 that he would never sell out in response to graffiti writers who criticized his business acumen.

His owls and cats were depicted in vibrant murals, paintings, and sculptures; he explained that his art aimed to create “a world in which mythology, history, metaphysics, and illustration all coexist in perfect harmony.”

The Norwegian Cruise Line ship The Getaway in Miami was decorated by LEBO with a seascape pattern centered on a mermaid and three ascending pelicans.

In addition to collaborating with Coca-Cola, Vitamin Water, Harley-Davidson, Audi, Microsoft, Lulu Lemon, Adidas, American Airlines, Gibson Guitars, Universal Music, Gloria Estefan, Bacardi, and the Miami Heat, he worked with several other corporations.

“We are saddened to hear of the passing of Miami street artist David Le Batard,” the Miami Heat stated in a statement. The Le Batard family has our deepest condolences as we lament their loss. “Rest in peace, Lebo.”
