Lewis Capaldi Illness: What Is Tourette Syndrome?

We need more people to disclose their Tourette Syndrome experiences. It is terrifying to receive a diagnosis.

Lewis Capaldi Illness: Lewis Capaldi has disclosed that he suffers from Tourette syndrome, a neurological disorder. The disorder causes him to make repetitive, involuntary movements and sounds. During an Instagram live, the musician disclosed that he had been misdiagnosed for some time after noting, “My shoulder twitches when I am excited, happy, nervous, or stressed,” before receiving the correct diagnosis. The first to report this was The Guardian.

His diagnosis was something he wanted to share with his fans because he “didn’t want people to think I was on cocaine or something,” and he stated, “I am living with it.”

“I can tell I’m doing it when I look back at my interviews from 2018,” he said. Regularly injecting botulinum toxin into his shoulder, Capaldi asserts that he is “constantly learning new coping mechanisms.”

As a child, Billie Eilish was diagnosed with the condition, making her one of an estimated 1.4 million Americans and 300,000 Britons who live with it. She wrote on Twitter, “I’ve never mentioned Tourette syndrome on the internet because nobody takes me seriously.” “In addition to the fact that I’ve never wanted Tourette’s to be associated with my name,” she said.

Emma McNally, chief executive of Tourettes Action, told the Guardian that although the disorder affects 1 in 100 school-aged children, the general public believes that only a small number of people are affected. We can only hope that Lewis Capaldi’s courageous decision to disclose his illness will encourage other prominent individuals to do the same.

We need more people to disclose their Tourette Syndrome experiences. It is terrifying to receive a diagnosis. Children who have just received a diagnosis greatly benefit from hearing and observing individuals who have overcome similar obstacles discuss their experiences.
