About His Life

Growing up, Matthew Perry had both good and bad times in his life. He was born on August 19, 1969, in the beautiful town of Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Perry went to Los Angeles as a child to follow his dreams. He got a few guest parts on TV before playing Chazz Russell on “Boys Will Be Boys” from 1987 to 1988. His big break came in 1994, when he joined the cast of NBC’s famous show “Friends.” He had already had parts on “Growing Pains” and “Sydney.”

Perry had a lot of great career accomplishments, but he also had personal problems, especially with addiction. He went to rehab for drug abuse in 1997 and again in 2001. Perry told Britain’s BBC Radio 2 in an honest interview in 2016 that he couldn’t remember filming seasons 3 through 6 of “Friends.”

In a 2013 cover story for PEOPLE, the actor said that he had abused alcohol and Vicodin in the past. Vicodin was given to him after a jet ski accident in 1997. Perry said, “I had a big problem with drugs and alcohol, and I couldn’t stop.” Things got so bad that I could no longer hide it, and then everyone found out.

He opened Perry House, a sober living center for men, in his old Malibu beach house, but something inside him “clicked.” This was a turning point in his life.
