According to the state fire marshal’s office, the so-called Grey Fire began around noon and was blazing in grass, timber, and wheat. The fire was threatening homes, a hospital, a highway, and the community of Medical Lake.
Level 3, or “go now,” evacuation orders were issued for approximately 4,800 residents.
Friday evening, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources announced on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, that a portion of Interstate 90 near the community of Four Lakes was closed due to the fire.
The National Weather Service had warned of “critical fire conditions,” citing dry conditions and the possibility of gusty winds that could accelerate the spread of new or existing flames. The origin of the fire is being investigated.
Spokane is approximately 15 miles (24 kilometres) to the southwest of Medical Lake.
