Medicare System Changes: What’s New and How They Impact You?

In 2024, the monthly premium for Part B, which covers doctor visits, outpatient care, and some preventative care, will rise.

Medicare System Changes: The out-of-pocket costs for Original Medicare (Parts A and B) are increasing.

Medicare Part A deductible this year is $1,632, which covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, and hospice care.

In 2024, the monthly premium for Part B, which covers doctor visits, outpatient care, and some preventative care, will rise.

The monthly premium will be $174.70, up nearly $10 from 2023, and the annual deductible for Part B will be $240, up $14 from 2023.

There has also been a slight increase in the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) for individuals with higher incomes.

Depending on your income bracket, the surcharge ranges from $69.90 to $419.30 for Part B premiums. It’s important to note that only about 8% of beneficiaries are affected.

Changes to Part D

The Inflation Reduction Act has resulted in a slight decrease in monthly premiums for Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, bringing them down to $55.50.

It’s important to keep in mind that this is an average and your actual plan costs may differ.

Once your out-of-pocket and manufacturer subsidies reach $8,000, you’ll qualify for catastrophic coverage in 2024.

A 5% copay is eliminated, effectively limiting your yearly out-of-pocket spending to around $3,300, which is projected to decrease further to $2,000 by 2025.
