Internet users criticised Disney for casting the titular character and a diverse group of dwarfs.
Netizens Rally Against Disney’s Snow White Film Choice: Assumed images from Disney’s forthcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White began to circulate online, sparking debate over the casting choice. Internet users criticised Disney for casting the titular character and a diverse group of dwarfs.
On Friday, July 13, the Daily Mail published the allegedly leaked photographs and deemed the depiction of the seven renowned companions of the Disney princess to be “politically correct.” They claimed the photographs were shot in Bedfordshire, England, on a film set.
The images depict an actress donning the princess’s signature blue and yellow dress with a red cape. In addition to the princess, seven other female and male actors are depicted in the photographs as Snow White’s attendants.
Disney selected the original cast for the 2021 live-action adaptation, with “West Side Story” heroine Rachel Zeglar portraying Cinderella and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. In contrast, the actress depicted in The Daily Mail’s images bore no resemblance to Zeglar.
According to the publication, the princess’ entourage consisted of individuals of diverse nationalities, heights, and genders. The purported set images were swiftly criticised by conservatives for their “wokeness.” One user, @ada_lluch, advocated for a Disney boycott.
Netizens Disapprove of Disney’s Casting for the Upcoming Snow White Film.
As soon as the smuggled photographs from the film’s production went viral, people took to Twitter to express their dissatisfaction with Disney for departing from its original storylines. They were adamantly opposed to Disney producing film adaptations in which characters of an entirely different ethnicity, gender, or race were portrayed than in the original stories.
Many argue that it dilutes the essence of the stories and confuses the young audience. Numerous individuals have noted that German authors composed the Snow White story and that the characters are also of German descent. Disney was criticised for hiring Rachel Zeglar, who is of Colombian descent.
The dispute over the live-action adaptation became even more acrimonious on Friday, when a Disney spokesman asserted that the viral images were fake. The images are fictitious and are not from our production. We are attempting to have the Daily Mail publish a correction at this time.
When prompted to respond to Disney’s statement, the publication claimed that the production studio verified the stand-ins for Zeglar and Andrew Burnap in the stolen photos.
Later, a Disney representative emphasised to a different website that the images posted by The Daily Mail were not authentic images from the film.
In January 2022, Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage discussed the recruitment of Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the German fairy tale. When Disney boldly cast a “Latina” as Snow White, he was astonished. According to him, the casting did not make logic.
