New Posts for Jails: For Better Management

“We have submitted a proposal to the state government to create 1,500 posts over the next five years. In the first phase, the government has created 306 new posts, which is the single largest creation of posts in prisons. The new posts and the increase in the number of prisons would lead to better prison management. It will help in inmate welfare, transparency and work efficiency,” the pgeneral manager Manoj Chhabra said to TOI.

According to the modernization plan, the prison department also plans to introduce biometric technologies such as fingerprints or facial recognition to accurately monitor the movement of inmates. The technology is also planned to be used in canteens for prisoners. – Currently, our employees manually check whether each prisoner reaches the section assigned to him. In the modernization project, we are installing turnstiles equipped with biometric scanners. Inmates can enter their assigned sections only after biometric authentication.

An inmate in one section cannot go to another section because technology prevents him from entering,” Chhabra said. The same technology will also be used in prison canteens where inmates can buy food and other necessities. At present, inmates receive small amounts of cash from their family members or relatives to make necessary purchases in prison in canteens.

According to the prisoner’s handbook, prisoners deposit money with prison guards, who in return give the inmates vouchers or vouchers of the same amount. Prisoners used vouchers to buy food. and other goods in prison canteens.
