In the rematch for the position of Broome County District Attorney, incumbent Michael Korchak will face off against defence lawyer Paul Battisti.
Korchak worked for the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office for six years before joining Gerald Mollen’s team in 1996 as an associate district attorney. He attempted to unseat Mollen as chief prosecutor in 2007, but was unsuccessful, and he resigned from government to enter private practise. After serving as Union Town Justice from 2014 to 2016, Korchak went back to the district attorney’s office to work as Stephen Cornwell’s top deputy prosecutor.
Battisti won the Republican primary in 2019, but Korchak nearly beat him as a Libertarian in the general election.
Battisti has experience representing criminal defendants in state and federal courts as a private practise defence attorney. The native of Broome County has served on the board of the Broome Drug Treatment Court Team and served as president of the Broome County Bar Association in the past.
The two have recently been at conflict over the issue of how prosecutions have recently dropped cases. According to state records showing that more than 7,000 cases were dropped, Battisti has alleged that the present administration has failed in its treatment of cases. Later, Korchak referred to Battisti’s remarks as “irresponsible” and cited a felony conviction rate that was more than twice as high as the state average.
The current town supervisor and two members of the Vestal town council are being challenged by a trio of freshmen running under the name “Real Democracy 4 Vestal.”
Tuesday’s primary will pit retired sergeant from the New York Police Department and former social studies teacher Maria Sexton against veteran Vestal Town Supervisor John Schaffer. Both the Democratic and Conservative party platforms are being used by Schaffer.
As part of the “Real Democracy 4 Vestal” campaign, Glenn Miller, a retired data analyst from Arizona, and Robert Greene, a former Army sergeant and software engineer for BAE Systems, will compete against incumbent Democratic Council Member Patty Fitzgerald.
Theodore Wolf and Patrick McPherson, two newcomers from the Republican party, are vying for supervisor and council member positions, respectively.
