Pam Shriver Profession

Shriver first garnered notoriety in 1978 when, as a 16-year-old amateur, she reached the women’s singles final at the US Open. Martina Navratilova, the current Wimbledon champion, was defeated in the semifinals by Shriver, while Chris Evert prevailed.

This early triumph with singles proved to be the pinnacle of her singles career. In 1978, Shriver claimed her first career singles championship in Columbus, Ohio. Between 1978 and 1997, she won a total of twenty-one singles titles.

The only Grand Slam singles final of Shriver’s career occurred at the 1978 US Open. She lost the subsequent eight Grand Slam singles semifinals, falling to Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Evert, and Hana Mandlková in succession.

Shriver disclosed in 2022 that she had an inappropriate relationship with her instructor, an Australian named Don Candy, beginning when she was a teenager. She decided to tell the story in part out of concern that juvenile tennis players continue to be placed in perilous situations.

Shriver won 14 of 15 doubles matches and five of five singles matches in the Federation Cup while representing the United States. From 1986 to 1992, she participated in 17 Federation Cup matches.

She and her compatriots competed in and won two of three finals. In 1986, the United States routed Czechoslovakia (3-0), in 1987 it lost to Germany (1-2), and in 1989 it defeated Spain (3-0).

Shriver has provided commentary for Seven Network in Australia, BBC in the United Kingdom, ABC, CBS, ESPN, and The Tennis Channel in the United States. Since her 1996 retirement, she has covered numerous events.

2010 at Wimbledon, James Blake reprimanded Shriver for criticising him while his match was still in progress, as he could hear Shriver from an outside commentary box. Shriver regretted her decision to respond to Blake live on television.
