Chrystal Phan of Victoria and Jim Bravo of Toronto were each bestowed with honourable mentions, each worth $3,000. Thirty finalists participated in the painting competition. Their work is on display at the Firehall Theatre in Gananoque, Ontario, until October 27.

The three competition jurors lauded Downey’s work in a joint statement: “The technical mastery and subtlety of the sitter’s expression both drew our attention to this piece. We were struck by the contrast between the young woman’s delicate facial expression and the tension in her hands and arms, and the simplistic, geometrical interior in which she is seated in an office chair.
The incoming chief of the Kingston Prize board, Jason Donville, stated that the nominated artists exemplify all that is exceptional and commendable about Canadian art. “They represent our Cassatts and Caravaggios.” Their artwork encapsulates the indomitable strength and diversity of our nation in exquisite photographs that define its character. Tonight, we are privileged to be in the company of such magnificent and gifted artisans. We regard all thirty nominees as deserving victors.
