Sherry Pollex Death Cause: Remembering A NASCAR Philanthropic Legend

When she was 35 years old and given a stage 3 ovarian cancer diagnosis, Pollex vowed not to let the condition define her.

Sherry Pollex Death Cause: Martin Truex Jr.’s former girlfriend Sherry Pollex, who was well-known in the NASCAR world for her humanitarian endeavours, has passed away. At 44, their ages were exactly in line.

When she was 35 years old and given a stage 3 ovarian cancer diagnosis, Pollex vowed not to let the condition define her. She might have been rendered paralysed by the diagnosis’ grim truth and horrifying figures. However, she chose to utilise it to inspire the NASCAR community to support her humanitarian efforts to fight the disease that has claimed so many lives.

Florida State University alumnus Pollex, a native of Marshall, Michigan, is presently battling cancer. She established Catwalk for a Cause in 2010, a philanthropic fashion show that, according to NASCAR, helped unite the stock car racing sector around the ongoing fight against childhood cancer, before receiving her diagnosis.

The foundation has increased its donations to fund anti-cancer medical research by more than $4 million since it started.

According to Pollex, there have been few improvements in treatment and care for her ovarian cancer over the past three decades, according to the website for The Martin Truex Jr. Foundation. As a result of her diagnosis, the foundation shifted its emphasis to “raise awareness, boost advocacy, and generate financial support for underfunded cancer initiatives specific to childhood and ovarian cancers.”

In 2022, Pollex told The Athletic, “That’s why I’ve become such an advocate for my disease because it requires awareness and they need people to talk about it—and nobody does. “I need to do it if I can assist someone else behind me who will receive a diagnosis. I must seize the opportunity to fulfil that role.

She and her ex-husband Truex Jr. made that opportunity into a profession. The logo for Martin Truex Jr.’s philanthropic organisation combines a gold ribbon for childhood cancer interwoven with a teal ribbon for ovarian cancer, both stripes lying flat to represent the racetracks on which Truex Jr. competes. Truex Jr. is the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season Champion.

A NASCAR Philanthropic Legend

Despite Pollex’s absence from last week’s Catwalk for a Cause, the event’s moderators praised the health advocate, calling her “an absolute hero” to the applause of the audience, for her outstanding contributions to the fight against cancer.

In addition to Pollex and Truex Jr. winning the Myers Brother Award from the National Motorsports Press Association in 2017 for their outstanding achievements to stock car racing, both women were finalists for the Comcast Community Champion of the Year Award in 2022.

To celebrate Sherry Pollex’s life, which was marked by an unparalleled commitment to selfless service, NASCAR issued the following statement: “NASCAR is saddened to learn of Sherry Pollex’s passing. Her fight against cancer and determination to help others through the Sherry Strong Foundation were an inspiration to all who knew her. Sherry’s family and friends are in the thoughts and prayers of NASCAR and the NASCAR Foundation.

In a tweet, NASCAR posted the following message to social media:

Pollex, a lifetime supporter of the Detroit Red Wings and a native of Michigan, credited her father Greg Pollex for developing in her a passion for the sport. Greg Pollex raced Late Models on Michigan dirt tracks before going on to operate the championship NASCAR team, PPC Racing.

Pollex offered people battling the disease hope when she rang a bell to signal the completion of her 17 months of chemotherapy on January 11, 2016, despite being given only a 30% chance of surviving in the five years after her diagnosis.

In 2019, Pollex told Jeff Gluck, “I wake up every day and just have so much thankfulness and excitement for this life that I’m experiencing, even though I have a chronic condition. And it’s really difficult. I frequently get the question, “I don’t get it. How do you maintain your optimism and constant happiness when having stage 3C ovarian cancer? And every morning I think what a wonderful life I have. There is so much beauty and goodness in the world, if you just take a glance around. If you look for us, there are many of us who wish to change the world and encourage one another.

Despite the greatest efforts of her doctors, Pollex’s aggressive, difficult-to-treat cancer returned in September 2021, and scans showed that it had spread to one of her lungs.

Pollex, a person of great faith and moral character, practised what former North Carolina State University men’s basketball coach Jim Valvano preached by not giving up in the face of hardship. As a result, she rose to fame in the battle against cancer and served as an example for anyone who had ever been diagnosed with the disease.

In 2022, Pollex told The Athletic, “I often wonder if that’s my purpose here.” Nobody really wants to be the cancer industry spokesperson, but maybe I’m supposed to go through all of this to open doors for other women. It’s not really what I would have chosen for myself. That can be a really difficult pill to take on some days. On other days, however, it’s more along the lines of, “You know, I’ve been given this incredibly important position in this life, and if I’m going to leave a legacy behind and help other people, then I need to do it 100 percent.
