Soccer-Moyes says West Ham’s new signings must adapt quickly

West Ham United manager David Moyes said it could be some time before his new signings bed in after a third successive Premier League defeat on Sunday left the Hammers bottom of the table. The Londoners have been busy in the summer, spending more than 100 million pounds on the likes of left winger Maxwel Cornet, centre back Nayef Aguerd, striker Gianluca Scamacca and defender Thilo Kehrer as West Ham look to push on.

But so far things are not ticking at all. Aguerd is yet to play because of injury while Scamacca, signed from Sassuolo, came on as a substitute for his debut in Sunday’s 2-0 defeat by Brighton.

Kehrer, signed from Paris St Germain on Wednesday, was also handed a first Premier League start but conceded a penalty from which Brighton took the lead when he brought down Danny Welbeck. Cornet has made just two substitute appearances and, for now, Moyes will likely have to keep faith with many of the players that took West Ham to the Europa League semis last season before fading out in the Premier League.

“I think it’s how quickly the new players integrate into the training and get used to it,” said Moyes. “If they don’t get used to the Premier League quickly then we have to keep going with players we’ve had, which at the moment looks like we could do with some freshening ourselves up. “If they integrate very quickly and they can make an impact in the Premier League, then we will get them in right away.

“At the moment, we are seeing flashes of it, I’m not seeing wholehearted things to make me go ‘Yes, they are ready.'” He even said Kehrer would not have started had he had other options but was forced to throw him in.

“I slept on it overnight. I felt it was better to put a recognised international defender in. If he had stayed on his feet (for the penalty), it would have been OK,” he said. West Ham are yet to score a goal this season and struggled to make much impression against an organised Brighton side.

“I think it will all be looked at really negatively and I can understand why,” Moyes said of the result. “I thought we played well the first 20 minutes. The penalty is a big moment in the game. “Certainly in the final third we didn’t make enough of the final chances. The penalty kick and goal was poor but I don’t think we were.”
