On Monday, October 9, 2023, Steven Lutvak, an iconic American songwriter who was 64 years old, passed away. Lutvak made a name for himself in the worlds of musical theater and film after being born on July 18, 1959, in The Bronx, New York. The musical “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” which he co-wrote with Robert L. Freedman, won a Tony Award and is widely considered to be his best work.

In addition to composing music for several films, Lutvak has also released a solo CD titled “The Time It Takes.” He received two prestigious awards for his work: the Kleban Award for Lyric Writing and the Fred Ebb Award for Musical Theatre Songwriting. He also received the theater industry’s highest honor, the Jonathan Larson Grant for Exceptional Achievement.

There has been no official word on what caused Steven Lutvak’s death. His family has not yet announced funeral arrangements, so his many fans and friends can only grieve in silence. The entertainment business will never be the same after Steven Lutvak’s passing.

The musical’s original score received Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominations, as well as the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Score and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics.

Lutvak received the American Theatre Wing’s Jonathan Larson Grant in addition to the Kleban Award for Lyric Writing and the Fred Ebb Award for Songwriting. Among the many accolades he has received is an ASCAP Award, a Bistro Award, and three MAC Awards for his work in the theatre. He also took home the trophy for New American Songwriter from the Johnny Mercer Foundation.
