The Weeknd Enlists Madonna and Playboi Carti for New Song “Popular”

It disclosed in a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 that the song was originally a collaboration with Playboi Carti. The Weeknd stated that a prior version of this composition existed. “So, I’ve had these vocals for a while, and I’ve just kind of worked around it and kept it tucked away. Now, however, it seemed time.” He also referred to Madonna as “the ultimate endorsement” for this composition.

“I’ve always wanted to work with her,” continued the Weeknd. “I’ve always desired to compose and produce a Madonna album… well, co-produce with her. I want to enter her universe and create a classic Madonna album because she is such a visionary with a singular perspective. That has always been my goal. Hopefully, this is just the appetiser.”

Since a Rolling Stone exposé revealed allegations that the show’s creators—Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim—mismanaged the production, The Idol has had a difficult time, with delays and a departure from the initial script’s “feminist lens.” Some of it was “sexual torture porn,” according to one crew member. During the press run at the Cannes Film Festival, the show’s stars and creators refuted these characterizations, despite early reviews corroborating the concerns articulated in the Rolling Stone article. The Idol is currently rated 25% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
