Nichols was detained by Memphis police on January 7 following a traffic stop, and he passed away on January 10. When police officers approached Nichols’ vehicle, they reported a “confrontation” at the time. The police report that he fled the site before another “confrontation” could occur.

Nonetheless, footage of the incident depicting the brutal assault was made public at the end of January, sparking widespread outrage. The four recordings originated from police dashboard cameras and mobile surveillance cameras.

Cameras documented disturbing images of Nichols being detained and assaulted by five officers at a suburban intersection after he was removed from his vehicle and stopped by authorities.

Five former Memphis police officers have pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges related to the murder of Nichols. While the investigation proceeded, the positions of three firefighters who responded to the scene were terminated.

In a statement posted to Twitter on Wednesday, civil rights attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci stated that the autopsy results “are highly consistent with our own reporting back in January of this year,” referring to the results of an independent autopsy conducted in January and commissioned by the attorneys, which concluded that Nichols died from “extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating.” The conclusions of the report were not disclosed in their entirety.

NEWS UPDATE:

We now know what we knew then. The method of death was homicide, and blunt force trauma to Tyre Nichols’ skull was determined to be the cause of death. The official autopsy report reinforces our determination to seek redress for this grievous injustice.
