US Ryder Cup Captain Zach Johnson Health Problem: A Look Into His Illness

Johnson was evasive about the nature of the illness, but admitted that it affected both his judgment and the team's lethargic start. His 12-man team lost every game on the opening day of the biennial battle against Europe.

Zach Johnson Health Problem: The U.S. captain, Zach Johnson, declined to offer an explanation for his team’s poor Ryder Cup debut on Friday, but he did affirm that illness has spread throughout the group and that he is relieved that a doctor is available.

Johnson was evasive about the nature of the illness, but admitted that it affected both his judgment and the team’s lethargic start. His 12-man team lost every game on the opening day of the biennial battle against Europe.

Zach Johnson Illness

According to captain Zach Johnson, the United States Ryder Cup team’s 612–112 deficit against Europe on day one was caused by an ailment that “spread” throughout the group. Europe won the foursomes session on Friday morning with a perfect score, gaining a 4-0 lead for the first time in history.

And the fourball tournament came to a disappointing conclusion, with the U.S. losing all of its matches in a single day.

“We’re fighting things internally,” Johnson remarked. “Players, caddies, it gets passed around a little bit,”

The United States requires 14 points to defend its Ryder Cup title, whereas Europe requires 1,412 points to reclaim it.

But Johnson added: “I’m grateful we have a team doctor.”

“The basic truth is that we’ve had to manage some unforeseen circumstances, which is extremely bad in terms of health. We have depth, so it’s not an excuse.”

“We have got some congestion and some signs of things that are unfortunate. It’s one of those where sometimes the energy is probably a little low, but the ability and desire to go out and play is still there.”

“That’s what we are weighing up. Every one of them still wants to play every match, which is encouraging.”

Johnson was reticent to discuss the sick players or caddies in detail, except to acknowledge that it influenced some of his pairing decisions.

“I would say that we would love to have everything planned out well in advance, but there are certain things you cannot control, and we are trying to control the controllables in our team room,” he continued.
