In 2017, while working as the medical correspondent for CBS New York, Gomez reported on Dupuytren’s disease, a condition that affected him personally. This condition causes the palms and digits’ connective tissue to thicken and contract.

Hand and upper extremity surgeon at HSS, Dr. Scott W. Wolfe, administered a succession of enzyme injections to Gomez as part of his treatment plan.

Throughout his tenure in journalism, Gomez held multiple positions. He served as the health and science editor for WNY-TV in New York City.

From 1994 to 1997, he worked for WCBS-TV as a medical reporter and health editor. In June 2007, he returned to WCBS-TV in New York as a freelance medical reporter, having joined WNBC-TV in 1997.

As the medical correspondent and senior health editor for WCBS, Gomez contributed informative segments on health, science, and medicine to the 5 o’clock news. Additionally, he served on the national boards of the American Heart Association and Princeton Alumni Weekly.

In addition, Gomez served as a mentor to journalism and medical students at the undergraduate level. He received numerous accolades, including six New York Emmy Awards and two Philadelphia Emmy Awards. Moreover, he was a member of the HealthCorps Advisory Board.
