Mike Bettes was a weekend meteorologist for WSYX until 1998, when he transferred to WLOS as the chief meteorologist. He worked for WLOS until 2003, when he left to become a field reporter for The Weather Channel.

From 2006 to 2009, he co-hosted Abrams and Bettes: Beyond the Forecast on the television network. He also co-hosted Weather Centre Live in 2009. From 2009 to 2014, he served as correspondent and fill-in anchor for the Wake Up with Al segment.

From 2009 until its rebranding in 2012 as Morning Rush, which he hosted until 2014, he co-hosted Your Weather Today. The programme was rebranded America’s Morning Headquarters in March 2014.

Bettes is currently a field reporter for The Weather Channel and the principal field meteorologist for the annual programme The Great Tornado Hunts, which provides a summary of tornado seasons. He observed scientists covering VORTEX2 for TWC. He has also reported in real time on Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and additional tropical cyclones, floods, and winter disasters.

Multiple times during the event, winds lifted and flipped their vehicle, sending it approximately 200 yards away. Following his recuperation, he and his colleagues returned to the Great Plains to forecast and report severe weather as part of the 2014 Tornado Track.
