Trump Supports the Idea

For this $5,000 check to happen, Congress has to approve it. And there’s another catch. The payment depends on how much money DOGE saves. So far, DOGE has only saved about $160 billion. That would mean a much smaller payment just around $993 per household not the full $5,000. So there’s still a big gap before they reach the $2 trillion goal.

Even with that gap, Fishback says he’s still hopeful. He recently told Chris Cuomo in an interview, “Yes, I really think this is going to happen. I’ve been on Capitol Hill the last two weeks meeting with members of the House and Senate. I’m very optimistic.”

This plan would only give money to households that pay more in taxes than they receive in benefits. Also, each check would go to a household, not to each person. So if this ever becomes real, it would help working families the most.

There’s also talk about what happens if Elon Musk steps down from DOGE at the end of May. But experts like Andrew Lokenauth told Yahoo! Finance that most ideas like this keep moving even when government leaders change. He pointed out that about 75% of these kinds of proposals still continue after leadership changes.

Right now, no one knows when or if these payments will really happen. But people are remembering the COVID-19 stimulus checks, which came in three rounds: $1,200 in March 2020, $600 in December 2020, and $1,400 in March 2021. That gives some hope that new payments could happen again.
