When should you renew your CalFresh benefits so that you do not lose them in September 2023?
How does re-certification for CalFresh work?
In order to continue receiving CalFresh benefits, CalFresh-eligible households are required to recertify their eligibility.
Renew your CalFresh benefits They must submit a new application by the 15th of the month before their certification expires.
Will CalFresh notify me when my recertification is due?
To ensure that this does not occur so frequently that it is unfeasible to keep up, the certification period for most California households is one year.
Some households with geriatric or disabled members have a certification period of 24 months.
There is a 36-month certification period for households with only elderly or incapacitated members and no income.
CalFresh is required to send a notice to recipients allowing them to reapply before their eligibility expires, so you are not solely responsible for remembering when you must recertify.
The notice is mandated by law to include a number of items, including the following:
- The date on which your certification expires
- The date by which you must submit a recertification application to continue receiving benefits.
- Consequences of failing to submit a recertification application on time
- Notice of the right to receive an application form upon request and to have it accepted if it includes a signature and legible name and address.
- Information on alternative submission methods available to households that cannot visit the certification office in person or do not have an authorised representative, as well as instructions on how to utilise these alternatives.
- The location where the registration must be submitted
- The right of the household to request a fair hearing if recertification is denied or if the household objects to the issuance of benefits.
- Notification that households consisting solely of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) applicants or recipients may register for CalFresh recertification at a Social Security Administration office.
- Notification that missing an interview may result in a delay or denial of benefits.
- Notify the household that it is responsible for rescheduling a missed interview and submitting required verification information.
