Starting on February 28th, California will increase its rebates to assist individuals with low to moderate incomes purchase their dream electric vehicle (EV). And believe us, we’re not talking about a few additional dollars – we’re talking about several thousand dollars in savings in addition to other perks!

So, where is this additional cash coming from? The California Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) is an initiative conceived by the California Air Resources Board. Yes, those who want to keep the air pure and fresh support your decision to switch to electric vehicles.

However, which vehicles are eligible to ride this rebate wave? It appears that Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y are prepared to navigate this electric wave. The news is even better now that Tesla has reduced the prices of these EV marvels.

First, the standard CVRP, for which many Californians are eligible. What are the normal rebate amounts? A hydrogen fuel cell vehicle costs $4,500, a battery electric vehicle costs $2,000, and a plug-in hybrid costs $1,000. The income thresholds are as follows: $135,000 for single filers, $175,000 for heads of household, and $200,000 for married couples filing jointly.

Now, let’s discuss the substantial reimbursements for individuals with low to moderate incomes. These are the rebates that will be in high demand beginning in February. Previously, fuel-cell electric vehicle prices were $7,000, battery electric vehicle prices were $4,500, and plug-in hybrid prices were $3,500. But here’s the kicker: these figures have recently been redesigned. Now, a fuel cell or battery-electric vehicle costs $7,500, while a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle costs $6,500.

We have not neglected the income thresholds for this extravagant rebate party. Up to 400% of the federal poverty level is acceptable. Here’s the skinny on those restrictions:

  • $54,360 for a single-person household
  • $73,240 for a two-person household
  • $92,120 for a three-person household
  • 111,000 dollars for a family of four
  • $129,880 for a five-person household

To qualify for this credit, your modified adjusted gross income must be less than $300,000 if you’re married and filing jointly, less than $225,000 if you’re filing as head of household, and less than $150,000 for all other filers.

Additionally, if you are interested in a used electric vehicle or fuel cell vehicle, you may be in for a treat. If you purchase one from a licenced dealer for $25,000 or less, you could receive a credit of up to $4,000 equal to 30% of the purchase price. What are the revenue limits for this?$150,000 for married couples filing jointly, $112,500 for single filers, and $75,000 for all others.
