Costco: How Does It Offer these Low Prices?

In 2017, Costco last increased its prices. The price of a basic membership increased from $55 to $60 at that time, while the price of an Executive membership increased from $110 to $120.

Costco: Bags of Skinny Pop popcorn for only $0.50 per serving. The price for a 62-ounce container of M&Ms is $18.99. These are only a few of the low prices that can be found on Costco.com. And because warehouse club prices tend to be even lower, it is evident that purchasing there could result in substantial savings.

Membership fees help Costco mitigate its expenses

Costco’s annual membership fees are presently $60 for a basic membership and $120 for an Executive membership. Executive membership offers 2% cash back on all Costco purchases, including online purchases.

Some people refuse to join Costco because they don’t like the idea of having to pay to merely enter a store where they’ll then, in turn, spend money. However, it is essential to note that these membership fees are what enable Costco to offer its famously low prices.

Even on its website, Costco states, “Our mission is to provide the best products at the lowest prices anywhere.” The membership fee is essential to attaining this objective because it allows us to operate at much lower profit margins than other retailers (these savings are passed on to you, of course).”

In fact, unlike Sam’s Club, Costco does not make it a priority to offer discounted memberships. Costco is confident that its prices are low enough for members to recoup their annual membership fees through savings on consumables and household necessities.

For instance, you might pay $60 per year for a base Costco membership. However, if you purchase at Costco once per month and save $15 on food and household items each time, you save $180 annually. Overall, you are $120 ahead, which indicates that you are not “losing money” on your membership charge.

Will Costco shortly increase prices?

In 2017, it last increased its prices. The price of a basic membership increased from $55 to $60 at that time, while the price of an Executive membership increased from $110 to $120.

Since it has been more than six years since Costco’s last fee increase, there is speculation that the retailer will shortly implement a new increase. Prior to 2017, the massive warehouse club increased membership fees in 2011. If this trend continues, it would make sense for membership fees to rise, if not by the end of 2023, then during the first half of 2024.

The cost-effectiveness of a Costco membership at that time will depend on your purchasing habits and the amount of money you can save. But keep in mind that if your membership fee increases by $5 or $10 (which is likely based on Costco’s previous increase), that higher fee enables Costco to continue offering you excellent products at low prices. And if paying $60 or $120 for a membership now is worthwhile, it will likely be worthwhile to pay a little bit more in the future.

The best credit card to use at Costco (and elsewhere)
