Earliest Date to Submit Your 2025 Tax Return: What is the date?

The IRS is preparing for the 2025 tax filing season, with plans to simplify the process and increase refunds, aiming to exceed $300 billion.

2025 Tax Return: The IRS has officially confirmed that the 2025 tax filing season will begin on Monday, January 27, 2025, and will run until the traditional deadline of April 15.

With this announcement the agency also shared plans for several improvements designed to simplify the filing process and provide better support for taxpayers. It is expected that over 140 million individual tax returns will be filed this year, with refunds expected to exceed $300 billion by the end of the season.

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel highlighted that many households received an average refund of over $3,100 last year, which was often the largest check of the year for many people. “Our employees understand the importance of getting these refunds processed, and they are committed to delivering for taxpayers,” Werfel said during a press conference.

In 2025, the IRS will roll out several technological improvements to make tax filing easier and more efficient. One of the key updates includes the enhanced Online Account, which will now offer more security and clearer filing options. Taxpayers will be notified about scams through a new banner on their account homepage. This will direct them to helpful pages that explain how to identify fraudulent communications.

The IRS has also made it easier for taxpayers to file using mobile devices. Now, 67 forms can be completed on mobile phones, and taxpayers can save their progress to finish later. Couples filing jointly will also find it easier to electronically sign their forms without extra steps.

The IRS has upgraded its chatbot system, which was introduced in 2024, to offer even more help with tax-related questions. These bots now use natural language processing, allowing taxpayers to ask specific questions and get the right answers. A voice bot, available in both English and Spanish, is also available to help users track their refund status through the “Where’s My Refund?” tool.
