Emergency Food Stamps Texas: How to Renew Your Application for Assistance

SNAP provides people with food benefits through food stamps, enabling them to purchase essential food items for their health and well-being.

Emergency Food Stamps Texas: SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) food benefits, formerly known as food stamps, help people and families with limited resources and incomes buy the food they need to stay healthy. Families or single people who satisfy the program’s eligibility requirements can receive SNAP benefits.

Before each benefit period ends—which usually lasts for six months, though some benefit periods can last anywhere from one month to three years—HHSC sends a renewal application to SNAP recipients.

The majority of adults (18 to 50) who do not live with children are only eligible for three months of SNAP benefits every three years.

If the adult works at least 20 hours per week or takes part in a job or training program, the benefit period may be extended. Certain people—such as those who are pregnant or have disabilities—may not be required to work.

The Lone Star Card is a plastic card that can be used at the register to pay for purchases just like a credit card and is used to distribute SNAP benefits. The authorized SNAP amount is credited to the cardholder’s account each month.

Emergency Food Stamps Texas: Who in Texas is eligible for SNAP?

SNAP benefits are available to legal noncitizens as well as citizens of the United States. If a noncitizen has lived in the United States for five years or longer, receives assistance related to their disability, or has a child under the age of eighteen, they may be eligible.

People and families in emergencies are eligible for emergency SNAP benefits. These include people with $100 or less in resources and less than $150 in monthly income, families with resources and less money than their most recent monthly expenses for utilities, rent, or a mortgage, and families that include migrant or seasonal farm workers with $100 or less in resources and very little income.

People can apply in person at an HHSC benefits office or over the phone at 2-1-1 for emergency SNAP benefits.
