Even though these workers paid into Social Security through other jobs, they’ve faced reduced benefits for decades.

Representatives Spanberger and Graves have called these rules unfair. In a joint statement, they said, “For over 40 years, millions of public servants—police officers, teachers, firefighters, and others—have lost Social Security benefits as an unfair penalty for dedicating their careers to serving their communities.” They believe these workers deserve their full retirement benefits, just like every other American who has contributed to Social Security.
