Find out if you’re eligible for increased Social Security Income and Disability Insurance

Congress is set to vote on the Social Security Fairness Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at removing controversial rules that have cut Social Security benefits for millions of Americans.

SSDI Increase: There is an important plan that Congress is about to vote on that could make Social Security benefits much better for many Americans, especially those who work for the government. A group of Democrats and Republicans are working together to get the Social Security Fairness Act passed. Representatives Abigail Spanberger (from Virginia) and Garret Graves (from Louisiana) are leading this effort.

This bill aims to remove two controversial rules—the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO)—which have been cutting Social Security benefits for millions of public servants.

The WEP and GPO have impacted public service workers like police officers, teachers, firefighters, and other state and local government employees for years. These rules reduce Social Security benefits for people who get a pension from jobs not covered by Social Security, like many government positions. Even though these workers paid into Social Security through other jobs, they’ve faced reduced benefits for decades.

Representatives Spanberger and Graves have called these rules unfair. In a joint statement, they said, “For over 40 years, millions of public servants—police officers, teachers, firefighters, and others—have lost Social Security benefits as an unfair penalty for dedicating their careers to serving their communities.” They believe these workers deserve their full retirement benefits, just like every other American who has contributed to Social Security.

Will your SSDI Increase?

The Social Security Fairness Act has gained strong support, with 325 cosponsors, enough to bring it to a vote in the House. If passed, this bill would restore full Social Security benefits to those affected by the WEP and GPO, which could greatly improve the financial security of many public servants. According to Marca, Spanberger and Graves are determined to see this legislation through, stating

For years, we have worked together to build bipartisan support for this effort and urge House Leadership to take real action to right this wrong.”

Public servants who have been affected by the WEP and GPO, such as teachers, police officers, firemen, and other state and local government workers, would be eligible. Getting this bill passed would not only increase their retirement income, but it would also honor their years of service to their communities.

The vote result is still unknown, but the Social Security Fairness Act has support from both parties, which gives people who have been refused the full benefits they’ve earned hope. If passed, this bill could help people who have spent their whole lives working for the government a lot.
