Food Stamps for College Students in California: Can College Students Qualify for CalFresh?

CalFresh, California's SNAP, aids low-income families with food handouts, potentially benefiting college students aged 18-49. 40% of eligible students meet exemption criteria.

Food Stamps for College Students in California: CalFresh is California’s version of SNAP, which helps low-income families get food handouts. College students may be able to get it. People between the ages of 18 and 49 who are in college, university, or trade school for more than half the school year can apply for CalFresh/SNAP if they meet certain exemption criteria and other SNAP standards.

CalFresh thinks that 40% of students, or 2/5 of them, will be able to apply for the program. There are students in this group who are parents, work part-time, are in EOP, get Cal Grants, are in job training programs, or are authorized to work.

For one applicant to be eligible, the household’s net monthly income must not exceed $1074; for eight applicants, the threshold rises to $3722. Add $379 per head for each person in a household that is larger than eight.

September SNAP Payment Schedule: Who Will Receive Food Stamps This Week?

If qualified, a monthly benefit of up to $291 will be provided to assist with the cost of some foodstuffs through the use of an electronic bank transfer card (EBT), which works similarly to a debit card.

To maintain a balanced diet, you can use CalFresh benefits to buy protein, vegetables, fruit, carbohydrates, and fats. However, the food must be cold when purchased. CalFresh benefits cannot be used to pay for gasoline, rent, utilities, or other non-food expenses. Misusing benefits for these purposes can lead to their withdrawal.

Food Stamps for College Students in California: What are the benefits?

The US Department of Agriculture runs the CalFresh SNAP program and has different standards for people who want to apply than for students. For most applicants, there are limits on their income and financial means.

  • In particular, applicants must have less than $2,750 in resources that can be counted. They must also make less than or equal to 200% of the government poverty level each month. This rule is more flexible, though, for homes with elderly or disabled people living in them.

Texas SNAP Schedule September: When Will Food Stamps Be Deposited This Wednesday?

  • CalFresh benefits can only be given to healthy people between the ages of 18 and 49 for a certain amount of time. People in this situation can only get benefits for three months every 36 months if they are not pregnant, don’t need child care, or work more than 20 hours a week. If they work more than 20 hours a week, this time limit might be pushed back.

To qualify for the CalFresh program, you must live in California and be a US citizen or a permanent resident.
