Fresno County, central California, is offering a guaranteed income initiative to eligible citizens, providing $500 monthly for 12 months to combat poverty.

Guaranteed Income Program California: A new guaranteed income initiative may make certain citizens of California eligible for cash infusions with no conditions attached.

The Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission (EOC) is offering $500 per month to qualified citizens of Fresno County, central California, for 12 months as part of its Advancing Fresno County Guaranteed Income initiative, which aims to combat poverty. According to Newsweek, the project will give 150 households living in “vulnerable communities”—those that are more vulnerable to financial hardship—an extra month of cash payments. The grants are not to be repaid.

Guaranteed income schemes, which offer monthly cash payments for a predetermined amount of time, target specific populations impacted by poverty and economic injustice.
In contrast to other federal or state benefits, such as SNAP, individuals are free to spend the money any way they like. After that, participants are assessed by researchers to search for gains in general health, financial security, and well-being.

According to the Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission website, “the Advancing Fresno County Guaranteed Income Program addresses concentrated poverty in these areas by offering a monthly supplement of $500 for one year to 150 households with young children (5 and under) in southwest Fresno and Huron.”

“Applications open on March 15th, 2024 and initial payments commence in summer 2024.”

How to apply for California’s Guaranteed Income Program payment?

There are choices accessible both online and in person for individuals who wish to apply. Applications can be submitted in person at two locations: the Senior Center, located at 16900 5th Street in Huron, and the Fresno EOC’s Local Conservation Corps, located at 1805 E California Ave in Fresno. The online application portal offers a simple means of submitting applications from a distance.

Although the application sites are easily accessible, acceptance into the program is not assured. A Fresno EOC spokeswoman told Newsweek that there is a tremendous level of demand, therefore participants will be selected by lottery.

Payments to a few chosen households will begin this summer and continue for a whole year. The exact dates of these payments’ beginnings are still pending confirmation.

Research on how this program affects users’ job status, well-being, financial stability, and happiness will determine its effectiveness.

The Fresno EOC projects significant developments in these areas, suggesting that the project could benefit its members significantly.
