How to Apply for Food Stamps in Texas and Get SNAP Benefits? Everything you must do

SNAP provides financial assistance to low-income individuals and families, enabling them to purchase food items using an Electronic Benefit Transfer card at approved retailers.

Food Stamps in Texas: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) aims to provide financial assistance to low-income individuals and families to help them purchase food. To qualify for the program, there are key details you need to know:

SNAP benefits are distributed via an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which operates like a debit card. This card can be used at approved retailers to buy food items, including fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, bread, and non-alcoholic beverages.

In Texas, the program is managed by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the program at the federal level.

How can I find out whether I qualify?

The main prerequisite for SNAP eligibility in Texas is that gross income before taxes and deductions cannot exceed 130% of the federal poverty threshold. Other restrictions include household size, income, and resources. This works out to about $1580 for a single person per month or $3219 for two or four.

Furthermore, net income must not exceed 100% of the federal poverty line after deducting housing, child care, and medical costs from the total amount. This comes to $1215 for a single individual per month or $2490 for a family of four.

To apply for the program, residents must be Texas citizens or lawful non-citizens of the United States. While undocumented immigrants are not eligible, their US-born children may be.

In addition, in order to be eligible for SNAP, Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) who are between the ages of 18 and 49 must work a minimum of 20 hours per week or enroll in a work/training program. Certain groups are exempt, including those who are pregnant or disabled.

Alternatively, you can apply in person by visiting your local office and bringing the necessary documentation.

Then, someone from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will talk to you, look over your application, and ask for any extra information they might need. You can do this chat on the phone or on your phone.

The HHSC will let you know by mail or through your online account if your application is accepted. They will also send your EBT card to you by mail.

You only need to recertify every six to twelve months; you don’t need to do anything else. The HHSC will help you through the process and let you know when it’s time to recertify.
