Illinois $686 in Energy Help October: Families living in Illinois will soon get help paying their energy bills as the state begins sending out assistance checks this October. The program is part of the Help Illinois Families initiative and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. It aims to support families who struggle to pay growing energy costs.

According to reports from the US Sun the average help through Illinois’ LIHEAP program is around $686. The exact amount depends on household income, how much energy the family uses, and the type of heating they have. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) has already verified applications for the new benefit period that started on October 1, 2025.

Illinois $686 in Energy Help October: Who can Get it?

Families qualify mainly based on income and need. To be eligible, a household’s combined 30-day gross income must be at or below 60% of the state median income. Households also have to show they are responsible for paying utility bills like electricity, gas, or propane. Renters can qualify too, but only if their rent includes energy costs and those rent payments are more than 30% of the household income, the DCEO said.

Some vulnerable groups receive first priority treatment, such as:

  • Seniors (60 years and above)
  • Households with a member who has a disability
  • Families with children aged five or under
  • Homes facing imminent utility disconnection or severely low levels of propane

All other qualified applicants can start applying on November 1, 2025.

  • A recent energy or utility bill
