Inflation Refund in New York: New York State is giving millions of residents a one-time “inflation refund” this fall to help families handle rising prices. The state government said that eligible people do not need to apply because the checks will be sent automatically. Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed the payments will start in October and continue through November 2025. The refund is a surplus in state sales tax collections and aims to return some money to families who need it most.

The Department of Taxation and Finance will mail over 8 million checks starting at the end of September 2025. Delivery will happen over several weeks, so some people may get their checks earlier or later than others.
Even those who received their 2023 tax refund via direct deposit will get this payment as a paper check. Residents who moved after filing their 2023 tax return should update their address to avoid delays. People who did not file a 2023 New York tax return will not receive the refund. The payment will not be used to offset debts.
The program helps families pay for daily stuff and fight high prices. People who qualify will get the money automatically. Some can get up to $400. Check the New York State Tax website for details.
