Key Differences Between Basic and Premium VA eBenefits Accounts

eBenefits is an online platform used by veterans, service members, and their families to manage their VA and military benefits, providing access to crucial VA and DoD tools and resources.

Premium VA eBenefits Accounts: Veterans, Service Members, and their families use eBenefits, an all-in-one online platform, to manage their VA and military benefits. Through a secure system, eBenefits gives users access to important VA and DoD tools and resources.

Learning the Differences Between Basic and Premium eBenefits Accounts

There is some difference between the Basic and Premium eBenefits accounts when it comes to the level of access and the activities that users can do on the platform. Basic accounts only let you use a few features. Premium accounts give you access to more tools, like the ability to manage and track your benefits in more detail, apply for benefits online, and see your VA medical records.

eBenefits Basic Account

  • You have restricted access to some features with a Basic eBenefits account.
  • You can enter your own information and personalize the website with a Basic account.
  • You cannot, however, view personal records kept in VA or DoD systems with this account.

This option might be a good place to start if you want to learn more about eBenefits without having to view official VA or DoD data.

Principal Advantages of a Basic Account:

  • Access to general information and resources.
  • Ability to enter and manage information that you provide directly.
  • Site customization options.

Premium eBenefits Account

A Premium account is necessary to access eBenefits fully.

Among many other features, the Premium account allows users to view personal data in VA and DoD systems, apply online for VA benefits, check the status of claims, and update address records.

For people who want access to official records and services and need to manage several facets of their benefits in one location, a Premium account is especially beneficial.

Principal Advantages of a Premium Account:

  • Full access to view and manage personal VA and DoD records.
  • Online application for various benefits, including compensation and pension.
  • Ability to check on claim statuses, order prescriptions, securely message VA physicians, and access health records via Blue Button.
  • Eligibility for transferring Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to dependents (Service members only).
  • Tools to manage financial and insurance information, such as updating direct deposit details and signing up for Group Life Insurance.

To use it, you need to make a DS L eBenefitsogon, which is a secure login that VA and DoD platforms share, and be signed up for the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS).

You can log in to your DS with Level 1 (Basic) or Level 2 (Premium). With a Basic DS Logon, you can set up a Basic eBenefits account. To use the Premium features, though, you’ll need to upgrade to Level 2.

You can prove your identity online or in some other way to move from a Basic account to a Premium account if you are eligible and want more features.
