Medicare 2026 Updates: Premium Drops, Drug Plan Changes, and How the Federal Shutdown Could Affect You

This year, the main enrollment window began on October 15 and will stay open until December 7, 2025. There will also be another smaller window from January 1 to March 31, 2026, but that second period is only for people already using a Medicare Advantage plan who wish to switch or return to Original Medicare.

Medicare Enrollment plan 2026: Original MedicareVs Medicare Advantage

Original Medicare is the main government program that helps older adults and people with certain disabilities pay for healthcare. It includes Part A, which covers hospital stays, and Part B, which covers doctor visits and other medical services. People who choose Original Medicare can go to almost any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare. They do not need to get referrals to see specialists.

The Original Medicare on the ohter hand does not cover everything. It does not pay for most prescriptions, dental work, or vision services. To get those, people can add a Part D drug plan or buy a Medigap policy that helps with costs like deductibles and coinsurance.

Medicare Advantage also called Part C is a plan from private companies approved by the government. It gives hospital and medical cover in one and often includes medicine too. Many plans also give extra things like dental vision hearing gym and rides to the doctor.

Choosing the Right Plan

Choosing the right plan depends on what you need most. People who travel a lot or visit many doctors in different places like Original Medicare because they can go anywhere that takes Medicare. Some people pick Medicare Advantage because it can cost less and gives more benefits in one easy plan.

Before you pick a plan you should think about your health needs from last year. Look at the doctors you visit most how many times you go to specialists and what medicines you use. You can check the Medicare Plan Finder or get free help from your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program to see which plan is best and how much it will cost.
