Michigan Students to Enjoy Free Breakfast and Lunch in the Coming School Year: Many families have difficulty affording sustenance. Michigan is one of the states afflicted by food insecurity, leaving numerous families without sustenance. According to Feeding America, a non-profit organisation that provides sustenance to more than 40 million people annually, one in nine Michigan residents suffer from hunger.
Children fare even worse than adults. One out of every eight minors in the state is food insecure. However, a newly enacted state law will ensure that more Michigan schoolchildren receive adequate nutrition throughout the school year.
Michigan Students to Enjoy Free Breakfast and Lunch in the Coming School Year
On July 20, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the fiscal year 2024 education budget into law. This budgeted $160 million to provide free breakfast and lunch to public school pupils through the Michigan School Meals Programme. Through the programme, all public school pupils will be eligible for two daily free meals.
The Michigan School Meals Programme is a state-funded initiative that reimburses schools for meals served to pupils who are ineligible for free or reduced-price meals. With over 1,400,000 public school pupils in Michigan, this will benefit many families.
This programme will launch at the start of the 2023–2024 academic year, now that the budget has been approved and signed into state law. All complimentary meals will adhere to the USDA’s dietary guidelines. Throughout the school year, meals will be served on days when classes are in session.
Prekindergarten through grade 12 students in districts that participate in the National School Lunch Programme and the School Breakfast Programme will receive one free breakfast and one free lunch per student. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) encourages participation from all eligible educational districts.
While this programme is available to all students in public schools, parents must complete out paperwork first. Application for Summer EBT and Education Benefits for the Michigan School Meals Programme or the Education Benefits form must be completed by all families who wish to participate in the Michigan School Meals programme. If they have additional concerns about the programme, families should contact their school districts.
