Social Security Announces Big Changes for Retirees in May 2025: What It Means for You

This system keeps payments organized and ensures they arrive on time

Some people began getting Social Security payments before May 1997. These people still follow a different rule. They usually receive their money on the third day of the month. But this time, in May, the third day is a Saturday. Because of that, the Social Security Administration will send the payment one day earlier. So they will get their money on Friday, May 2.

Extra Payments in May for SSI Recipients

The Social Security Administration gives SSI to people with very low income, serious disabilities, or those over 65 with limited money. The monthly amount can be up to $967 for one person, $1,450 for couples, and $484 for a caregiver.

In May, SSI recipients will get two payments. The first comes on Thursday, May 1 for May. The second arrives early on Friday, May 30, since June 1 falls on a Sunday. When pay dates land on weekends or holidays, payments go out earlier.

Most payments arrive on time, as 99% are sent electronically. If your payment doesn’t show up on the expected day, don’t panic. The Social Security Administration advises waiting three business days before reporting the issue. Typically, the problem is resolved quickly.
