OAS Supplement 2023-2024: If you live in Canada, most Canadians receive Old Age Insurance (OAS) payments every month as they age. The Canadian government offers a number of different benefits to retirees and retirees. When a person turns sixty or older and meets the residency requirements, the Canadian government can offer them various financial benefits. For those age 65 and older, the Old Age Insurance Program (OAS) provides a small monthly pension, often called an old-age pension. GIS, which provides other financial benefits to low-income OAS recipients, is part of this program.

Old Age Security is a program based on age and residency, because you cannot start receiving OAS until you are 65 or older. Years of residence in Canada after age 18 are required to qualify for the residence-based benefit. You must have lived in Canada for 10 years before applying for OAS, and you must have lived in the country for at least eligible years before age 18 to receive a full pension.

What is Old Age Insurance in Canada?

Old Age Security (OAS), Canada’s largest pension program, pays eligible residents and citizens a taxable monthly payment when they turn 65. It is funded by general tax revenues collected by the government. you don’t have to participate directly. Unlike the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and employee pension plans, you can continue to receive Old Age Insurance (OAS) benefits regardless of your work history.

OAS Supplement 2023-2024 Eligibility Criteria

The following criteria determine your eligibility for OAS benefits, and they depend on whether or not you live in Canada:

Regarding Canadian residents

  1. You must be 65 years old to receive Canada OAS.
  2. You must live in Canada to receive Canadian OAS.
  3. At the age of 18, you must have lived in this country for at least ten years. For those who do not live in Canada.

For non residents 

  1. You must be 65 years old to receive Canada OAS.
  2. You must have been a Canadian citizen or legal resident on the day before you left Canada.
  3. At the age of 18, you must have lived in this country for at least twenty years.

OAS pension payment 2023 dates

For spouses or spouses of LI old-age pension recipients (ages 60-64), the OAS grant is a monthly benefit. The amount of these benefits depends on your marital status and your previous year’s income. The maximum monthly payment for GIS, Support and Support Allowance is changed four times a year according to the consumer price index, as in the OAS pension.

How to claim an OAS supplement?

Applying for an old age pension is optional. Service Canada will send you one of the following 64 next month:

  1. A letter stating that default registration has been selected for you. If the information in the letter is correct, you can proceed without applying for OAS here.
  2. OAS pension payment 2023 will be automatically paid to you in the month after your 65th birthday.
  3. A letter describing your potential eligibility for OAS and application. You must then apply for OAS immediately.

The form sent with the letter must be completed and sent to Service Canada. You must submit the OAS Supplemental Form 2023-24 as soon as possible for your application to be reviewed and payments to begin the month after your 65th birthday. You should apply for an OAS pension as soon as possible if you turned 64 and did not receive a letter from Service Canada that month.
