SNAP Benefits Stolen: How to Protect Your EBT Card Benefits from Theft and what to do if it is Stolen

EBT theft in California is increasing, requiring recipients to protect their benefits from fraud, including EBT skimming and sharing personal information.

SNAP Benefits Stolen: EBT theft is on the rise in California, making it important for recipients to protect their benefits from fraud. One method used by scammers is EBT skimming, where devices are placed on card readers to steal information from your card.

Scammers may also trick cardholders into sharing personal information, such as PINs, card numbers, or Social Security numbers. To stay safe, be vigilant and cautious with your EBT card and personal details.

What to do in the event that your EBT benefits are pilfered

If you think your EBT benefits have been stolen, act quickly. Contact your caseworker at 707-253-4511 or EBT customer support at 877-328-9677. You will also need to complete and submit the EBT 2259 form to officially report the theft.

If your cash benefits were stolen, you must file both the EBT 2259 and EBT 2259A forms, available in English and Spanish.

How to stop the benefits on your EBT card from being stolen

Make sure you change your PIN frequently, ideally before each benefit distribution or after significant transactions, and don’t share it with anyone else to protect your benefits.

It’s critical to keep an eye out for any unusual behavior on your EBT account and to change your PIN right away if you see anything fishy. When using a card reader, make sure to cover the keypad when entering your PIN and check the device for any odd attachments.

Be wary of texts that seem fishy. Scammers may say they are from CalWORKs or EBT services and ask for personal information because they think your card has been stolen. Do not answer or click on the links in these messages. Instead, call the county office in your area to make sure about any worries. Don’t use ATMs that look like they’ve been tampered with or that have strange directions.
