SNAP benefits: What does it cover, and what is the age limit?

SNAP, a federal program, offers food stamps to over 38 million Americans, covering a range of benefits including food, groceries, and non-alcoholic drinks. Benefits are obtained through Electronic Benefits Transfer cards, and eligibility varies by state.

SNAP benefits: More than 38 million Americans enroll in the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program each year in an effort to combat the rising expense of living, but is there an age restriction on who is eligible to apply for food stamps?

No, is the succinct response. Age is not a determining factor in eligibility to apply because there are three basic requirements: gross monthly income, net income, and assets. However, there are additional requirements for individuals between the ages of 18 and 52, and starting in October 2024, for those between the ages of 53 and 54.

The maximum amount of time that can be spent on SNAP is three months for a person between the ages of eighteen and fifty-two, as long as they are not disabled or have dependents who are also disabled.

The three months to three years restriction is waived under the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act (1996) if an individual participates in a work or training program for at least twenty hours per week. Those who are pregnant, have children living with them, are mentally or physically unable of working, and other situations qualify them for an exemption from this as well.

For veterans, destitute people, and former foster youngsters up to the age of 24, there are additional brief exceptions from the requirement.

What is covered under SNAP?

With the help of SNAP, low-income individuals can purchase goods including fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meats, fish, poultry, baby food, fiber-rich foods, basic meals, and non-alcoholic drinks that are necessary for maintaining or improving their health.

Products like paper goods, cleaning supplies, and home items are not allowed. In a similar vein, alcohol and tobacco are prohibited.

The only method to obtain benefits is by using an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which is also used to make payments for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) assistance.

Since SNAP is a federal program, it also runs at the state level, much like CalFresh. The amount of assistance and benefits provided varies by state, so find out how much yours offers.
