SNAP Florida Benefits Application: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, provides nutritional assistance to low-income seniors, persons with disabilities and other low-income individuals and families.

SNAP is a federal program administered by the Florida Department of Children and Families, Office of Economic Self-Sufficiency (ESS), which determines eligibility according to federal guidelines.

SNAP eligibility requirements and benefit levels are established, for the most part, at the federal level, and are uniform throughout the country, although states have the flexibility to adapt certain aspects of the program.

SNAP benefits: What does it cover, and what is the age limit?

SNAP is not available to individuals who:

  • Those who have been convicted of drug trafficking,

  • If you are fleeing a felony warrant,

  • Intentionally violating the SNAP rules,

  • Non-citizens without a qualifying status

  • Students who, under certain circumstances, are enrolled in higher education at least half-time.

The food assistance benefits may be used by SNAP households to purchase bread, cereal, fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, poultry, dairy products, and seeds to grow food for the family.

Those cards cannot be used to purchase non-food items, such as pet food, soaps, paper products, household items, toiletries, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vitamins, medicines, food to eat at the store, or hot food.

How can I receive SNAP benefits in Florida as quickly as possible?

As stated by the Florida Department of Children and Families, you may apply for assistance merely by providing your name, address, and signature. It is encouraged, however, that you answer as many questions as possible and sign your application as soon as possible. This will allow them to assist you more quickly.

It may take 7 to 30 days for your application to be processed after the Department receives your signed application.

Expedited cases can obtain food assistance benefits within seven days. Your answers on the application will determine whether your household meets the criteria for expedited food assistance.

Accelerated households must have:

  • monthly gross income less than $150 and liquid assets less than $150;

  • monthly gross income plus liquid assets less than the household’s rent or mortgage plus utility costs; or,

  • be an indigent migrant or seasonal farm worker with liquid assets of less than $100.
