SNAP Use in America: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, called SNAP, helps millions of Americans buy food every month. Many people depend on this support to meet their basic needs. But the number of people using SNAP is very different from one place to another in the United States.
Some states and territories have more than 1/5th of their people on food help, while other places have only around 5%. These big differences show how unequal money, jobs, and living conditions can be in different parts of the country. They also show which communities might struggle more with the new budget cuts and new rules that Congress has recently added.
Trump proposes $2,000 ‘tariff dividend’ for Americans, Congress approval still needed
Across the whole country, SNAP helps almost 42 million people every month. This means about one out of every eight people in the United States needs this food help. The number of people using SNAP changes over time.
The rate goes up during hard times like health emergencies or economic trouble. It also grew in 2020 during the health crisis, and even in 2025, there were issues because of the government shutdown.
Social Security Benefits May Increase Benefits by $200 Monthly
In May 2025, the average SNAP benefit was $188.45 per person for one month. The amount is not the same everywhere because it depends on things like how much money a family earns, what they spend on important cost and how many people live in the home. Federal law sets a limit for the highest possible benefit.
This limit is tied to something called the Thrifty Food Plan. Congress has chosen to restrict changes to this plan in the future so the government can cut more than $186 billion in spending over the next ten years.
