SSI Living Arrangement Rules: Can Two People with SSI Live Together?

Disability benefits are crucial financial resources for disabled individuals, including cohabiting individuals who jointly apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

SSI Living Arrangement Rules: Disability benefits are considered an indispensable financial resource for those who are disabled. Occasionally, this will encompass cohabiting individuals who wish to jointly apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Both spouses may, in general, file for Social Security disability benefits simultaneously. However, because each program for disability benefits has its requirements, this is considerably simpler for some programs than for others.

Couples can receive both Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) if they meet the requirements of both programs.

The Social Security Administration expects both you and your spouse to provide medical documentation that meets the specified impairment criteria. A disability-related incapacity to labor may qualify an individual for benefits.

Your application remains unaffected by the SSA’s evaluation of your qualifying criteria, including but not limited to your spouse’s income, disability, or anything else.

SSI Living Arrangement Rules: What additional variables impact your SSI?

An additional determinant in the calculation of your eligibility for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is your residential arrangement. Consequently, your SSI benefits may differ based on your geographic location.

Living in a mobile home, one’s residence, another individual’s domicile, or in a residential facility can reduce the amount of SSI income received.

This holds if you as well:

  • Residing in an individual’s house, apartment, or mobile home results in inadequate payment of food or lodging expenses.
  • Involved in the cost of food, rent, mortgage, electricity, and heating fuel with another individual.

  • Medicaid will cover expenses associated with living in a nursing home or hospital more than half the time.
  • Having a hospital or nursing home stay for a month as a minor?
  • Are you receiving medical treatment in a public or private facility, and Medicaid covers more than half of the expenses? SSI Benefits for Facility Residents Capped at $30
