State Stimulus Payments: Which States are Implementing Monthly Guaranteed Basic Income Payments?

GBI schemes, trialed in over 50 US communities since 2019, provide monthly payments to low-income individuals, focusing on specific groups, despite opposition from Republican legislators.

State Stimulus Payments: As state governments fight poverty and assist their citizens experiencing financial difficulty, guaranteed basic income (GBI) schemes have become a trend throughout the United States in recent years.

With more than 50 American communities trialling the GBI model since 2019, it has become a popular approach to addressing poverty in these localities. Participants in their trial program were paid $100 to $1,000 a month for a designated term without any strings attached.

Usually, participants lie below the federal poverty threshold. In the meantime, initiatives have also concentrated on certain groups, including homes with children, new and expecting moms, and those living in homelessness.

$1300 Stimulus Payment Eligibility: Who is eligible to claim this payment?

Republican legislators, who claim the programs are “socialist” and that they deter low-income individuals from joining the workforce, still oppose GBI legislation.

Given this, Iowa outlawed GBI in April in line with Arizona’s earlier this year restriction on basic income, rendering it absent in all 50 states.

State Stimulus Payments: Which states are sending payments through GBI programs?

Basic-income pilots have finished in cities and counties in Arizona, Alabama, Virginia, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Mississippi, Louisiana, Indiana, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington and Washington D.C.

With approximately 1,000 participants from low-income backgrounds, Los Angeles residents of California can use the ‘Breathe’ program to get $1,000 every month for three years. Those living in Long Beach, Mountain View, and Sonoma County can receive $500 every 12 to 24 months.

IRS Stimulus Check: What are the chances of a new stimulus check from the IRS?

Colorado opted to divide the projected 800 members of their Denver program into three groups: one gets $1,000 a month for a year; another gets $6,500 upfront and subsequently $500 a month; and the third group gets $50 a month.

Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York and Texas have programs in certain cities. Every state government’s website offers more details.
