The Fresh Start Program for Student Loans: Student Loan Forgiveness

Access to federal student aid and other government loans, flexible repayment plans, short-term relief, suspension of collection efforts.

The Fresh Start Program for Student Loans: The Fresh Start initiative, launched by the US Department of Education, provides ineligible borrowers of federal student loans with the chance to recommence repayment while maintaining good standing. Individuals who defaulted on their federal student loans prior to the pandemic are eligible for this program.

Access to federal student aid and other government loans, flexible repayment plans, short-term relief, suspension of collection efforts, loans being reinstated to “current” status on borrowers’ credit reports, elimination of negative default marks from credit reports, and a minimum of three years of credit towards income-driven repayment loan forgiveness to compensate for time spent in default during the pandemic payment freeze are among the program’s benefits.

The Fresh Start Program for Student Loans: Student Loan Forgiveness

Approximately 7.5 million borrowers have federal student loans in default and may be eligible for the Fresh Start program, according to federal data. However, Fresh Start is exclusively accessible to borrowers who have federal student loans, such as privately held FFELP loans, government-held Perkins loans, direct loans, or government-held Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) loans.

Additionally, loan defaults must have occurred prior to the forbearance period commencing on March 13, 2020. Not eligible are private student loans, Perkins Loans held by the institution, Health Education Assistance Loan Program loans, or loans administered by the United States Department of Justice.

These are the fundamentals that you must be aware of.

Borrowers must make payment arrangements with the Default Resolution Group of the Department of Education or the guaranty agency that retains their FFELP loans in order to enrol in the Fresh Start program.

Loans will be transferred to a new loan servicer and default markings will be removed from the borrower’s credit report following the agreement of a long-term payment plan. The program is enrollable via the Internet, telephone, or postal mail.

Senior director of college affordability at The Institute for College Access & Success, Michele Shepard, advises borrowers to submit their applications as soon as the system becomes operational. “The government said it will reach out to eligible borrowers to inform them of the program, but don’t count on it,” according to her. “Roughly 25% of borrowers in default do not have an email address on record with the Education Department.”

Currently available, the Fresh Start program can position consumers for success prior to the resumption of payments in October 2023. To catch up, neither a large sum of cash nor loan consolidation is necessary. Borrowers who fail to enroll in Fresh Start at the conclusion of the program will forfeit all benefits. The program’s additional details are posted on the website of the Federal Student Aid Office.
